New Azul restaurant brings dining and cocktail lounge concept to San Juan’s Condado district

A new restaurant and cocktail lounge has joined the busy dining scene along Ashford Avenue in San Juan’s Condado district, bringing a two-level concept to one of Puerto Rico’s best-known tourism corridors.

Azul Restaurant & Verde Lounge opened July 17 at 1214 Ashford Ave., occupying the former Hard Rock Cafe space in Condado.

The concept combines two distinct experiences under one roof. Azul operates as the restaurant on the lower level, while Verde Lounge offers cocktails in a more intimate setting upstairs.

Azul’s menu blends contemporary cooking with Puerto Rican and Caribbean influences. Among its offerings is a beef carpaccio served with fried capers, guajillo-mustard vinaigrette, plantain panko and Parmesan.

The restaurant also offers a wine program designed to accompany its dinner menu.

Upstairs, Verde Lounge shifts the focus toward cocktails and a late-night atmosphere. Its menu includes The Bitter Garden, a mezcal-based cocktail made with Italicus and Bitter Bianco. The drink is botanical and layered, with restrained bitterness and a dry finish.

The separation between the restaurant and lounge allows guests to move from dinner downstairs to drinks upstairs without leaving the property, giving Azul a format that extends beyond a traditional restaurant experience.

The opening adds another upscale dining and nightlife destination to Ashford Avenue, the commercial spine of Condado and home to many of San Juan’s hotels, restaurants, bars and shops.

Despite being only weeks into operation, Azul presents a polished concept that appears designed to appeal to both Puerto Rico residents and visitors looking for a full evening experience in Condado.
