A new international route officially took flight at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport this week as Cayman Airways launched a new seasonal nonstop service connecting Austin to Grand Cayman.
The inaugural flight departed Sunday, May 24, marking the first time a Cayman Airways aircraft landed at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The new once-weekly nonstop route connects Austin with Owen Roberts International Airport in Grand Cayman and will operate through Aug. 16, 2026.
Airport officials said the route provides the only current nonstop service between Texas and the Cayman Islands, expanding international travel options for Central Texas travelers seeking Caribbean destinations.
To mark the inaugural departure, Austin-Bergstrom hosted a ribbon-cutting celebration at Gate 6 featuring airport leaders, airline officials, community partners and representatives from the Cayman Islands government. Hon. Gary Rutty, Deputy Premier and Minister for Tourism and Transport, and Ayanna Victorin, acting U.S. general manager for the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, attended the launch event.
Passengers boarding the first flight were welcomed with tropical-themed gifts, including turquoise socks, mocktails, plush sea turtles and island-inspired treats. Travelers also enjoyed a photobooth experience and performances by the Swanky Kitchen Band and Quadrille Dancers before departure.
“The launch of Cayman Airways’ service to Grand Cayman represents another important step in AUS’s international expansion and our commitment to bringing new airline partners to Austin,” said Ghizlane Badawi, chief executive officer of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. “This route not only delivers the only current nonstop access from Texas to the Cayman Islands but also reflects the strong demand from our passengers for convenient, high-quality travel options to top global leisure destinations.”
Ivan Forbes, Cayman Airways vice president of airports and cargo services, said the route represents a milestone for both the airline and the Cayman Islands.
“Austin, in the heart of the Lone Star State, is one of the fastest-growing and most dynamic cities in the United States, and we are pleased to introduce direct flights between the capital of Texas and our wonderful Cayman Islands,” Forbes said.
Grand Cayman is known for attractions including Seven Mile Beach, Stingray City, the Cayman Crystal Caves, the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park and Bioluminescent Bay. The island also draws visitors with its culinary scene and duty-free shopping in George Town.
Tickets for the new service are available through Cayman Airways and local travel agencies.
