Franklin Mountains State Park, the largest urban state park in North America, will once again echo with the grind of gears and the grit of determination as riders from across the Southwest gather for the Puzzler Endurance Mountain Bike Race, an iconic winter competition that puts even the most seasoned bikers to the test.
Now in its latest edition, the Puzzler invites cyclists to conquer 6,200 feet of climbing across the unforgiving singletrack terrain of the Franklin Mountains. Held over two days at the historic Bowen Ranch Roundhouse just north of U.S. 54 on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the event is known for its tough climbs, rocky switchbacks, and panoramic desert views.
Presented by the Borderland Mountain Bike Association, the race offers multiple course lengths to accommodate different levels of experience. Whether you’re a pro pushing your endurance limits or a beginner gaining mountain confidence, the Puzzler’s courses promise EPIC challenges, remote scenery, and a deep sense of accomplishment.
“Being more confident in the mountain is what every biker desires,” organizers say. “The Puzzler course will help you get there.”
The event welcomes riders of all ages and offers on-site camping, parking, and a close-knit community atmosphere. With over 400 riders, more than 1,200 spectators, and 35+ award categories, the Puzzler has grown into a major outdoor event for the El Paso area and beyond.
Organizers emphasize that the course isn’t just about racing—it’s about camaraderie, skill-building, and mountain awareness. Riders learn how to be better biking partners while navigating rugged and remote desert trails that stretch to the far north reaches of Franklin Mountains State Park.
For visitors, the Puzzler is a chance to experience El Paso’s unique blend of high desert landscapes and warm community hospitality. For locals, it’s a proud showcase of the trails and terrain that make this corner of Texas such a draw for outdoor adventure.
