Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller Supports Gulf of Mexico Shrimp Industry

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller took to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico this week to showcase and support the hardworking shrimpers of the Gulf of Mexico shrimping industry.

  • Gulf of Mexico Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony
Miller attended the annual Blessing of the Fleet organized by the Texas Shrimp Association in honor of Gulf of Mexico shrimpers heading out to sea. He acknowledged the risks of the job, saying: “This is dangerous work. It’s a job that not everybody can do. I’m a cowboy, and I’m tough, but I’m not shrimper tough.”
  • Gulf of Mexico Shrimp Vessel Experience
Commissioner Miller boarded a shrimping boat in the Gulf of Mexico with Chris Londrie, President of the Texas Shrimp Association, to experience firsthand the physical demands of the Gulf of Mexico shrimp harvest.
  • Gulf of Mexico Shrimp Packing Facility Tour
Afterward, Miller toured a packing facility processing wild-caught Gulf of Mexico shrimp in Brownsville, observing safety protocols and quality control operations.
  • Gulf of Mexico Shrimp Advocacy
Miller encouraged consumers to choose wild-caught Gulf of Mexico shrimp over imported farm-raised alternatives, criticizing the latter as “inferior, raised in deplorable conditions, and not healthy.”
