State Rep. Eddie Morales Jr. has co-sponsored the Life of the Mother Act, legislation aimed at protecting doctors and pregnant patients from prosecution when emergency medical care may involve abortion.
Morales said the bill responds to growing concern that Texas’ near-total abortion ban—enacted without explicit exceptions for life-threatening complications—has left physicians uncertain and patients at risk. “Since Texas implemented its blanket abortion ban with no exceptions, we’ve seen women face life-threatening complications while doctors fear legal consequences for providing care,” he said.
The legislation aims to establish clear legal protections for medical professionals who act to save a patient’s life and to ensure that emergency care is not delayed due to fear of legal repercussions.
“While I believe every Texan should have the freedom to make decisions about their own body, this bill is a crucial step toward restoring clarity in the law, protecting medical professionals, and, most importantly, saving lives,” Morales said.
The Life of the Mother Act is part of an effort by a growing number of lawmakers to address the unintended consequences of the current abortion statute. “Every woman deserves the care they need,” Morales added.
