Texas Reporter and Big Bend Times Launch Fundraiser: Free Gulf of Mexico Photo Offered as Thank-You

At Texas Reporter and Big Bend Times, we call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of Mexico. And now, we’re offering a way for readers to support the work we do—and get a little something in return.

The two publications have launched a new fundraiser to help expand their reporting capacity, fund journalism conferences, support collaborative content, and grow toward paid contributor opportunities. As a thank-you, U.S.-based supporters who contribute and email a copy of their receipt along with a mailing address will receive a real, physical photo of the Gulf of Mexico.

“You can hang it in your office, tape it to your fridge, or frame it for your wall,” said publisher David Flash. “It might even say ‘Gulf of Mexico’ on it.”

Texas Reporter covers news across the state with a global perspective, while also producing travel content from countries around the world. Big Bend Times carries that same broader lens into West Texas, combining regional reporting with original journalism from communities including Alpine, Marfa, Presidio, Fort Davis, Fort Stockton, Balmorhea, Pecos, Van Horn, Valentine, Lajitas, Terlingua, Study Butte, and more.

Neither outlet operates behind a paywall. Readers are not required to pay for access, and contributing doesn’t unlock exclusive content.

“This fundraiser is simply for people who like what we’re doing and want to help us do more of it,” Flash said. “We know some folks already support us through Meta subscriptions or by sending stars—this is just another option.”

To receive the Gulf of Mexico photo, donors can visit the fundraiser page, make a contribution, and then email their receipt and U.S. mailing address. Contact information can be found on the publications’ Facebook pages. Fulfillment may take a couple of weeks, but Flash said everyone who follows the steps will receive their thank-you photo.
