The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has announced a major expansion of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, one of the state’s most beloved parks. The recent purchase of a 3,073-acre property adjacent to the park in Llano County will double the amount of publicly accessible land, enhancing recreational and conservation opportunities for Texans and visitors alike.
A Milestone for Texas State Parks
TPWD purchased the property for $43 million, using funds from the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund, which was overwhelmingly approved by voters in November 2023. This $1 billion fund, derived from a state budget surplus, ensures dedicated funding for acquiring and developing new state parks.
Governor Greg Abbott celebrated the milestone, stating, “The expansion of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area will allow tourists from across the state and around the world to enjoy even more of the majesty of Texas. Together, we will continue to ensure that what makes Texas unique and beautiful is preserved for generations.”
Enhancing Enchanted Rock’s Legacy
Previously used as private hunting land, the new property will now provide expanded recreational activities and conservation efforts. The land features a striking rock formation that offers a fresh vantage point of Enchanted Rock’s iconic pink granite dome, as well as opportunities to preserve the night sky and natural viewshed in a rapidly developing area of the Hill Country.
Jeff Hildebrand, Chairman of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission, expressed his enthusiasm: “Enchanted Rock is cherished by Texans across the state, and we are thrilled to add a property of this size and scope to this beloved park.”
Next Steps and Development
The TPWD, with input from the public, will develop a plan to determine how best to utilize the new property for recreational and conservation purposes. While this process will take several months, TPWD promises to keep the public informed on key milestones and potential opening dates.
“This expansion underscores the importance of the Centennial Parks Conservation Fund,” said Rodney Franklin, Director of Texas State Parks. “We are excited to increase opportunities for recreation and conservation at this iconic park.”
