Texas A&M Forest Service Launches Modernized Emergency Operations Center

Texas A&M Forest Service inaugurated its revamped Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in College Station, marking a significant enhancement in Texas’s wildfire management and emergency response capabilities. The ceremony, held on December 17, 2024, showcased the state-of-the-art facility designed to bolster Texas’ preparedness against natural disasters and emergencies.

The EOC is a technological leap forward, equipped to monitor wildfire risks and manage the deployment of firefighting resources across the state effectively. Al Davis, the Director of Texas A&M Forest Service, highlighted the critical role of the center, pointing out its necessity in the face of Texas’ growing population and the escalating challenges of wildfire management.

Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp praised the Texas A&M Forest Service’s pivotal role in crafting Texas’ top-tier disaster response strategies. He expressed confidence that the upgraded operations center would amplify the service’s capacity to protect Texan lives and landscapes.

The facility is expected to streamline the coordination between different emergency management sectors, enhancing response times and operational efficiency during crises. During the event, attendees were briefed on the center’s comprehensive capabilities, including real-time surveillance of fire incidents and detailed resource tracking.

Dr. Jeff Savell, Vice Chancellor and Dean of Texas A&M AgriLife, and Brandi Ashby, Assistant Chief of the Texas Division of Emergency Management Region 8, also spoke at the event, outlining the collaborative efforts facilitated by the new EOC.

Statistics presented at the opening illustrated the EOC’s robust impact since the beginning of the year, with significant mobilizations including 1,428 personnel and 187 pieces of equipment for fire response, and over 1.68 million gallons of water and retardant deployed to combat wildfires.

The EOC not only underscores the commitment of Texas A&M Forest Service to enhance state and community safety but also serves as a hub for integrating efforts across various emergency management agencies in Texas, fortifying the state’s readiness and response posture against the backdrop of increasing wildfire threats.
