It’s Getting Close! Corpus Christi’s New Cable-Stayed Bridge Nears Completion

In a significant development for Corpus Christi, the construction of the new Cable-Stayed Bridge (CSB) is nearing completion, marking a major milestone as the South Tower, now the tallest structure in South Texas, reaches its ‘Topping Out’ at an impressive height of 540 feet. This achievement is a testament to the advanced engineering and commitment to quality that defines the project.

The recent completion of all 20 Upper Tower (UT) lifts by the formsetters represents a critical step forward. These specialists overcame considerable challenges, including vertical ascents of up to 320 feet from the bridge deck, extreme weather conditions, and a rigorous work schedule that included nights and weekends. Their flawless execution has brought the tower to its final pre-cap height, and with the installation of the cap by the tower crane, the structure will soon reach its ultimate height of 546 feet.

This ‘Topping Out’ milestone not only marks a significant moment in the project’s timeline but also highlights the extraordinary capabilities of the construction team in handling complex, high-altitude tasks. The focus is now shifting to other crucial aspects of the bridge’s construction, such as segment lifts and cable installations, showcasing the ongoing commitment to advancing infrastructure in Corpus Christi.

Moreover, the Pre-Cast Yard (PCY) team in Robstown, Texas, has completed casting all 2,651 segments needed for the CSB and its connecting approaches. The final segments, which are among the most complex due to their internal diaphragms, include 414 cubic yards of premium-grade concrete and 244,404 pounds of rebar. Designed to last up to 170 years, these segments highlight the project’s dedication to durability and strength.

The meticulous approach to quality assurance at the PCY ensures that each concrete batch meets the highest standards, with multiple testing procedures employed to verify the strength and integrity of the materials used. The precision with which the team casts and stages segments underlines the technical expertise and operational excellence that characterize this project.

As Corpus Christi’s CSB project moves towards its completion this winter, it stands as a beacon of technical achievement and a future landmark for the region. Congratulations to all involved as they continue to work towards completing all structural elements of this monumental bridge, which promises to enhance the infrastructure and aesthetic landscape of Corpus Christi.
