Annual Bronco Drive Returns to Big Bend National Park This Winter

This December, Big Bend National Park will once again host the eagerly anticipated Bronco Drive, bringing together Ford Bronco enthusiasts for a weekend of exploration and camaraderie. Set for December 26th to 30th, 2024, this event promises adventure and community spirit, with the breathtaking landscapes of Big Bend serving as the backdrop.

Event Highlights: The Bronco Drive, now in its third year, offers participants a chance to tackle the rugged terrain of Big Bend in their Broncos. The event kicks off with a casual gathering on December 26th at the Chisos Basin Campground, where attendees can meet fellow Bronco owners and prepare for the coming days’ activities.

Daily Activities:

  • December 27th-29th: Each morning begins at 7:00 AM at the Chisos Basin Amphitheater, where trail leaders will brief groups before heading out. Attendees can look forward to driving through historical ranch and mining roads suitable for all models of Broncos, including the Bronco Sport. For those interested, a day trip to Boquillas, Mexico, is available, so passports are necessary.
  • December 28th: A special dinner event at La Kiva, Terlingua, invites all participants to enjoy an evening of nostalgia with an ’80s hiking attire theme, complete with karaoke entertainment.

Logistics and Volunteering: Participants are responsible for their transport, accommodation, and meals. Volunteers experienced in past drives are sought to assist as trail leaders or support roles, helping guide less experienced drivers through the park.

Accommodation Options:

  • The primary base camp at Chisos Basin Campground offers facilities and is central to event activities, with reservations recommended well in advance.
  • Additional camping options include Rio Grande Village, Cottonwood Campgrounds, or backcountry sites for those seeking a more rugged experience.
  • Nearby AirBnB stays and the accommodations at Chisos Mountain Lodge provide alternatives for those preferring more comfort.

Preparation Tips: Given Big Bend’s remoteness, it is advisable to bring sufficient supplies, though a convenience store at the Chisos Basin can serve urgent needs. Dining options are available at the Chisos Mountain Lodge Restaurant, and attendees should confirm the restaurant’s hours prior to arrival.

The Bronco Drive is more than just an off-road adventure; it’s a celebration of the enduring spirit of exploration that defines the Bronco community. For registration and more detailed information, please visit the event’s official Facebook page or contact the event organizers directly.

As December evenings in the park can be quite cool, participants are advised to pack accordingly to ensure comfort throughout this exciting outdoor adventure.
