The effort to establish a high-speed rail line connecting Austin, San Antonio, and Monterrey, Mexico, progressed last month as officials from both sides met to discuss the project. According to Newsweek, the rail would provide an alternative to the congested I-35 corridor.
The Texas Passenger Rail Advisory Committee, led by Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai and Travis County Judge Andy Brown, met aboard Amtrak’s Texas Eagle with Mexican officials, including Emmanuel Loo of Nuevo Leon and Saltillo’s mayor-elect, Javier Diaz Gonzalez. Sakai highlighted the need for solutions for commuters, stating, “We need to come up with creative solutions for passengers who are looking for alternatives.”
While there is enthusiasm in Mexico, challenges remain in Texas, including Union Pacific’s control of the rail line and resistance to funding from state lawmakers. The project could benefit from federal infrastructure funds, but Texas must cover a portion of the costs.
