Costco is set to build its largest store in Texas, a 174,000-square-foot facility in west Midland, marking a major development for the city and the broader region. The $50 million project is poised to create 100 full-time equivalent jobs, providing a significant economic boost.
This new store, which will be the biggest in Texas, is expected to serve not only Midland but also the wider Big Bend and Transpecos areas, where large retail options are limited. Residents of these regions, who often travel to larger cities like El Paso or Midland for major shopping needs, will now have a closer and more convenient option.
Construction is slated to begin by June 1, 2025, with a projected completion date of August 31, 2026. The Midland Development Corporation (MDC) has committed to reimbursing Costco up to $6.5 million for infrastructure and site improvements associated with the project. The reimbursements will be made in three phases:
- $2,167,544.67 upon the completion of construction.
- $2,167,544.67 when Costco certifies the creation of 100 new full-time jobs in Midland and maintains those jobs for one year.
- $2,167,544.67 after the 100 full-time jobs have been maintained for two years.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong, who signed the contract supporting the Costco project, emphasized the city’s dedication to fostering economic growth. This new Costco, the largest in the state, is expected to significantly impact the local economy, offering a major retail option that will attract shoppers from across Texas, particularly those from the Big Bend and Transpecos regions.
This development marks a notable milestone for the area, promising expanded shopping opportunities and reinforcing Midland’s position as a growing economic hub in Texas.
