Reviving the Grandeur: Hotel Settles Shines Again in Big Spring

A Storied Past Meets Modern Luxury at the Historic Hotel Settles

Nestled in the heart of West Texas, the historic Hotel Settles reopens its doors, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of the 1930s intertwined with the comforts of modern hospitality. Built in 1930 by Will R. and Lillian Settles following a prosperous oil discovery, the hotel initially boasted 150 rooms, a restaurant, and a pharmacy, standing as the tallest building between El Paso and Ft. Worth. Its construction was a testament to early 20th-century ambition and elegance, designed by renowned architect David Castle.

However, the Great Depression and subsequent economic downturns led to changes in ownership and periods of decline, including a closure in 1982 when the hotel succumbed to the local economic pressures of the oil bust. The once-gleaming beacon of Big Spring fell into disrepair, its grand rooms and corridors left to the ravages of time and neglect.

The turn of the century brought renewed interest and hope. In 2006, Big Spring native G. Brint Ryan acquired the property and embarked on a monumental $30 million restoration project. His vision was clear: to restore the Hotel Settles to its original splendor while updating it to meet contemporary standards of luxury and comfort. The restoration preserved the historic essence of the hotel, with the original Grand Ballroom and lobby meticulously brought back to their former glory. Modern amenities were seamlessly integrated, ensuring a luxurious experience for guests.

Today, Hotel Settles stands as a full-service, independently owned luxury hotel. It features 65 guest rooms and boasts 15,000 sq. ft. of functional space, including the opulently restored Grand Ballroom. The Settles Grill continues to be a community hub, offering fine dining with Texan comfort food. The hotel also features a full-service spa, swimming pool, hot tub, and fitness studio, catering to both leisure and business travelers.

The legacy of the Settles is not just in its architecture but in its role as a community landmark. Over the years, it has hosted celebrities like Elvis Presley and President Herbert Hoover and served as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. Each room tells a story, notably the Judge’s Chambers, a nod to the colorful local figure “The Judge,” and the T & P Meeting Room, which pays tribute to the Texas & Pacific Railroad’s significant role in the region’s development.

Hotel Settles is more than just a hotel; it is a symbol of resilience and pride for Big Spring. Under the stewardship of G. Brint Ryan, it promises a unique blend of historical richness and modern sophistication, inviting guests to experience the enduring spirit of West Texas. Whether for a luxurious stay, a business event, or a taste of local cuisine, Hotel Settles welcomes all to partake in its storied and vibrant legacy.
