Set Sail on the Historic 1877 Tall Ship Elissa with Galveston Historical Foundation

The Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) invites the public to experience the thrill of sailing aboard the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa, the Official Tall Ship of Texas, during its annual day sail series. This unique event offers participants a rare opportunity to step back in time and learn the art of 19th-century sailing aboard one of the world’s oldest vessels still sailing today.

Scheduled for April 5 through April 19, 2024, at the Galveston Historic Seaport, Pier 22 Suite 8, Galveston, Texas, these day sails provide a hands-on historical adventure on the Gulf of Mexico. Trainees, aged 10 and older, will become part of the crew, engaging in setting sails and maneuvering the 144-year-old Iron Barque through the waters, under the guidance of experienced sailors.

This immersive experience is designed to give participants a glimpse into the life of a 19th-century sailor, complete with hands-on tasks and educational lectures. The day sail includes a 6-hour journey on the Gulf, lunch, and refreshments, ensuring a memorable day out on the water.

Please note, due to the ship’s historic design, the Elissa is not ADA accessible. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable, and all trainees must sign a waiver of release to participate. The event is a tobacco and alcohol-free experience, maintaining the authenticity and safety of the historic journey.

In the event of inclement weather, the GHF will make every effort to reschedule participants for another sailing date, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience this unique adventure.

The upcoming dates for the Elissa day sails are as follows: April 5-8, April 11-14, and April 17-19, 2024. Each sailing day offers a limited number of spots for sail trainees, providing an intimate and engaging experience for all involved.

For those interested in joining this extraordinary journey through history, tickets and additional information are available through the Galveston Historical Foundation’s website or by contacting them directly at (409) 765-3432. Don’t miss your chance to sail aboard the historic Elissa and experience the legacy of one of Texas’ most treasured maritime treasures.
