AIA Houston’s Sandcastle Competition Set to Return to Galveston Beaches with Five-Year Guarantee

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Houston chapter, after a series of productive negotiations with the Galveston Park Board, has announced the much-anticipated return of the Sandcastle Competition in Galveston. Scheduled for September 21, 2024, this beloved event is now guaranteed a presence on East Beach through 2028, marking a significant victory for both architecture enthusiasts and the Galveston community.

The revival of the competition, a highlight for architects and design aficionados, was solidified in a special meeting of AIA Houston’s Board of Directors. This agreement, extending over five years, underscores a commitment to the long-term future of the event and its positive impact on local tourism and community engagement.

“We are delighted to announce the continuation of the AIA Sandcastle event in Galveston,” said Rusty Bienvenue, Executive Director of AIA Houston. “Thanks to our discussions and a new agreement with the Galveston Park Board, we’re ensuring that this iconic competition remains a fixture of our community for years to come.”

The Sandcastle Competition, known for its creative showcases and community spirit, will be enhanced by a cooperative marketing effort and financial planning between AIA Houston, the Galveston Park Board, and Visit Galveston. This partnership aims to not only celebrate architectural creativity but also to bolster Galveston’s appeal as a destination for both residents and visitors.
