Explore the Cosmos: Star Gazing Event at Pedernales Falls State Park

Pedernales Falls State Park is set to host an enchanting evening under the stars this Saturday, March 2, from 7 to 11 p.m., inviting the public to gaze upon the celestial wonders of the night sky. Organized in collaboration with the Austin Astronomical Society, the event promises an opportunity for both expert and amateur astronomers to share their passion and knowledge with the community.

The “Star Theater,” a designated area within the park known for its clear, dark skies, will serve as the venue for this stargazing adventure. Participants are encouraged to bring their own chairs and prepare for a night filled with astronomical discovery. The park’s location, away from major light sources, offers an unparalleled view of the night sky, including multiple planets, constellations, and the Milky Way, weather permitting.

To participate, attendees are required to RSVP through a link provided by the park. Those with existing camping reservations need not RSVP or purchase an additional Day Pass. For others, a Day Pass can be acquired for free with the Texas State Park Pass or for a $6 fee per adult. Passes are available online or at the park, with exact cash change recommended.

The event emphasizes a few important guidelines to ensure an optimal stargazing experience for everyone:

  • Light restrictions are in place within the viewing area to preserve night vision. Visitors are asked to refrain from using cell phones or lights, except for soft red lights or flashlights with red filters.
  • Pets are not permitted in the viewing area, though they are welcome in the parking lot.
  • Smoking is only allowed in the parking lot area, not within the viewing area.
  • Respect for the astronomers’ equipment is paramount. Attendees are encouraged to approach and inquire about what is being observed but should not touch the equipment without permission.

For those interested in bringing their own stargazing equipment or volunteering their equipment for public use, contact Stephen.Garmon@tpwd.texas.gov to apply as a volunteer.

This event is contingent upon weather conditions, with updates available on the park’s Facebook page. Cloudy skies won’t deter the event, but rain will necessitate cancellation.
